4Mine is a life saver.Oct 07, 2006
By W. Glenn Ashomre
I am in the process of wiring a boat and the mass of wires can get very confusing. The wire tracker is in constant use and works well out to about 200' but you do have to remember that any wire electrically connected to the transmitter will be carrying a signal. For example, in tracing home wiring if you connect to the neutral (white wire) you will find a signal on all the white wires because they are all connected to the same bus at the panel. Similarly if you trace the hot (black wire) you have to turn off the breakers to isolate the wire you are tracing. But you should do that anyway to avoid a lot of smoke and possibly a rather painful supprise.

Overall, the Wire Tracker is well worth the money as long as you follow the instructions and have a little understanding of how it works.

3Wire TrackerJan 04, 2007
By Paul Kinzelman
It worked fairly well, but I was tracing wires in an RV in a bundle of wires. I found that there was substantial crosstalk, so tracking down the one wire was not as easy as I had hoped it would be. Once I found the right terminal post and I could touch the metal, it was obvious it was the right one. But trying to touch the insulation to determine whether it was the right wire didn't work very well. I did find it useful though.

4Works great if you know how to use itMay 23, 2008

I bought this product to trace ethernet wires in the house. You can plug the phone (RJ11) plug into ethernet (RJ45) with no problems at all. The product works great, provided you know how to use it.

Some of the other reviews suggested that the device does not work as advertised. It is true that the sensor probe picks up everything. However, if you hook up the emitter properly, you will get a much stronger signal from the tracker wire than from the other wires. In addition, you will hear a two-tone, siren-like sound from the probe when you're near the tracker wire, whereas you won't hear anything from the other wires.

So, the my advice for using this device properly is as follows:

LED -- Off, Sound -- Off: Not close to any wires.
LED -- On, Sound -- Off: Close to wires but not the right one.
LED -- On, Sound -- On: Found the right wire!

I give it a four star rating because it does work, but it should have come with a better instruction manual.

5Excellent tool! worked like a champ!Dec 12, 2006

I built a home 3 years ago. I wired several rooms for sound. I never hooked up the speakers. (The wires were behind the sheetrock). I got around to putting the speakers in the ceiling and could not remember where I had placed the wires. This wire tracker did just what they said it would. I followed the instructions. It was too easy. Found the exact spot for the speakers!

Saved me a great deal of work and eliminated sheet rock repair.

4Big time saver in tracing alarm wiresJul 15, 2008
By J. Parrott
When our house was built it was wired for an alarm system but the system was not installed. So, the alarm wiring is behind the sheetrock, no records of location (company that installed is out of business) and with about 15 wires that I could not trace visually this unit saved me a lot of time. I only cut into one place by mistake and that is outstanding in my book. The one mistake I ended up making was caused by a thermostat wire which ran in the same bundle. You can get cross talk!

It takes a little trial and error to make sure you are on the right wire and as you work the trace, keep reducing the sensitivity on the probe. Put a piece of blue making tape to mark the spot. Check your stud locations and see if it all makes sense before cutting.

For what I paid for this unit it is a real bargain and paid for itself many times over in labor saving. Not fool proof but darn good results are possible.
